The Break Room

The vast increase in remote work caused by the pandemic threatens to weaken even strong organizational cultures. To be sure that this doesn’t happen, leaders need to make sure that their culture is adaptable. That’s the only way to improve work culture.

There are a few practices that can help us survive and boost work culture during these difficult times.

6 Steps to Improve Work Culture

1. Promote Resiliency

We should hire and promote people who are really resilient and able to adapt to new and sometimes difficult situations.

They will embrace our conditions with curiosity and they will create a positive change in our working environment.

2. Make It Easier to Work From Home

We should communicate good examples of how our organization is adhering to cultural values through new practices.

That’s because, in the new covid reality we will need to seek, we should choose and highlight new examples of culture we want to create.

3. Create And Keep Home Working Practices

If we offer an option of remote work and we adapt our organization to it, let’s think about keeping or adapting this model even after the pandemic ends.

One focus point is meetings. Revamped meetings that adapt specifically to remote workers can help us maintain productivity while maintaining motivation to work.

4. Provide Technical Support

Change procedures to make it easier for employees to work from home.

Equip your team with tech and productivity tools to help them stay connected and productive.

5. Provide Emotional Support

Working from home can contribute to loneliness and frustration. We should do what we can to provide emotional support to employees.

Leaders should create a virtual office with a calm and optimistic approach which helps create a level-headed workplace where people can still get things done with passion and pleasure.

6. Remember The Social Aspect

Don’t forget about non-work interactions and team building. Creating time and space for workers to talk about news, hobbies, and other topics — just as they would do in the office — helps them relieve stress and feel better connected.

It can be a weekly or monthly virtual team-building exercise to build connections between employees.

For example, here in Kambu, we promote monthly short talks. This is a good occasion to see each other and tell a story on any topic which has interested us recently. It can be related to work but not necessarily. The most important thing is to inspire and have fun.

Conclusion: How to Improve Work Culture

Showing our humanity by being empathetic to the real, human needs of our team is not only necessary for business success – it’s also the right thing to do.

And we can be sure that the decisions we make today will affect how people see our company for years to come.
